FEATURED RACER:
John Wall’s story speaks to the popularity of street legal drag racing. This is as much a mind game as it is pure competition. What the spectator sees on race day is the result of what Edison called “the hard work of thinking”. Here’s the challenge: Start with your favorite street car, build sick horsepower, modify the chassis to convert the power into forward motion, hone your driving skills enough to perch the whole package on the rear tires for 600 feet or so and do it all safely without depleting your retirement account. Oh yeah.. and beat the guy in the other lane. There are some other nattering details like conforming to the rules for each class but you get the picture and it’s no wonder this segment is attracting so many ‘thinkers’ in the sport of drag racing.
John Wall bought his Mustang GT new in 1992 and drove it to work for 5 years. He made a few hits with the car in stock trim early on, but in 1998 John began to add power with a Powerdyne centrifugal blower, quickly changing to a Vortech S-Trim, then a Vortech XX-Trim. All the while going quicker, John eventually dispensed with the blowers and switched to Turbo’s. |
|
In 2005, he got serious and cut the car apart in preparation for a cage. Cool thing about these projects... the tool inventory grows too! John bought a tube bender, made a jig, built the 25.2 cage to SFI specs and had it certified. Handy guy eh?
John has been running mid-low 7’s and gunning for the 6’s but his MLS style head gaskets were limiting boost to the low 30lb range. Troy and Sam at Ford Performance Solutions in Anaheim (714-773-4177) fitted up some SCE head gaskets to the 428ci Fontana aluminum block/Edelbrock head combo and the boost is going up. |

Watch out for John in Outlaw 10.5 class at PSCA and West Coast Hot Rod Assn. events.
